We are currently seeking an Animal Biologist to work at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

TASKS/SERVICES.  The contractor shall:

  • Provide experimental support including procedural assistance for laboratory members to include, but not limited to:
    • Blood draws
    • Splenectomy removal of lymph nodes
    • Other murine procedures as instructed
    • Design and perform laboratory experiments.
  • Work with staff on the management of the mouse colonies.
  • Maintain the laboratory, including:
    • Order supplies and maintaining inventories
    • Receive and maintain purchase receipts
    • Maintain equipment and equipment maintenance records
  • Maintain an animal science protocol.
  • Maintain an accurate, detailed research record.
  • Collect, analyze and interpret data and results; summarize and synthesize results.
  • Work with staff to summarizing and synthesizing of data in oral and written formats for presentations, abstracts and manuscripts by laboratory staff.
  • Attend and participate in meetings, including formal and informal laboratory and branch meetings.


REQUIREMENTS.  The contractor must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Life Sciences or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a murine laboratory environment.
  • Research experience in immunology and/or molecular biology.
  • Expertise in the following techniques:
    • Mouse handling and procedures including intraperitoneal and intravenous injections, oral gavage, bioluminescence imaging and dissections.
  • Ability to learn new procedures and teach known procedures to others.
  • Knowledge of proper laboratory techniques, disposal methods, laboratory safety procedures and universal precautions.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and computer programs, including expertise in Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal and time management skills.
