Medical Information Specialist

Medical Information/Congress Manager 

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Manager, Medical Congress and Education manages and implements global communications strategies across multiple therapeutic areas and compounds throughout the product lifecycle, and executes medical education strategies established by the Global Scientific and Medical Communications team. This work encompasses global congress medical affairs booth planning, medical materials development and scientific education activities for external and internal audiences, and manages communications agencies, medical writers and event planners. The Manager works closely with Medical Affairs colleagues across the globe as well as internal stakeholders from multiple departments. This role ensures all timelines are met or exceeded and is responsible for process quality, efficiency, and consistency. The position reports to the Senior Director of Global Scientific and Medical Communications (GSMC).

 

MAJOR DUTIES OF POSITION:

  • Steers successful implementation and delivery of global priorities as it pertains to medical materials and medical education across all global products in major three therapeutic areas
  • Up to 50% travel to 8-10 medical congress events per year
  • Contributes to the development of global medical materials development plans
  • Contributes to the development of global medical education plans
  • Preferred knowledge of ophthalmology compounds
  • Develops and execute global congress plan, including driving medical affair booth design, developing collateral, ensuring appropriate staffing
  • Following the strategy set by the Senior Director, GSMC, drives creation, utilization and maintenance of medical and scientific materials, including core scientific slide decks, scientific training decks, lexicons/glossaries, master FAQs, case study repositories, patient journey compendia, MOA illustrations/videos, MA booth panels, scientific intelligence reports, literature monitors and summaries, advisory board executive reports and other scientific materials as needed
  • Coordinates with internal stakeholders on development of SRLs and task specific FAQs, including Medical Information FAQs and Medical Booth FAQs
  • Administers medical materials review committee, prepares and distributes agendas, schedules and facilitates meetings, records adjudication, compiles and distributes meeting minutes
  • Provide oversight for review and approval of scientific and medical materials and medical materials in compliance with corporate standards and government/industry regulations.
  • Tracks and alerts appropriate people of the need to review currently approved materials based on expiration dates, acquisition of major new data sources or other event requiring review of currently approved materials
  • Work with internal stakeholders (Field Training Director, TA specific Medical Directors, Director of Medical Information) to evaluate need for additional scientific or medical materials
  • Assist in execution of scientific symposia, including collaboration with communications agencies, faculty, driving symposium content development and distribution of post-symposium reports
  • Administers educational grants committee; schedules meetings, distributes agendas, facilitates discussion, records adjudication, distributes meeting notes
  • Maintains ongoing communication and reporting updates to the Senior Director, GSMC.
  • Effectively and consistently communicates the medical communications and education strategy, tactics, and plan progress to internal business partners, including upper management
  • Interact directly with Clinical Development, R&D, Biostatistics, Drug Safety, and Regulatory Affairs to fully understand development programs, regulatory and medical strategies, and develop key scientific and communication objectives for the therapeutic area to develop credible, fair balanced, timely scientific materials and educational programs
  • Attend conferences, symposia or other meetings and staff Medical Affairs booths
  • Participate as needed in advisory board meetings and panels with key external stakeholders who advise on communications and educational objectives
  • Understand and continually improve internal processes related to materials development and scientific education

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Advanced degree in health sciences preferred: Masters Degree
  • 5- 8 years previous relevant work experience with 2-5 years’ experience in a communications role in the pharmaceutical industry; ophthalmology experience a plus
  • Exemplary interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in written communications
  • Attention to detail
  • Track record of efficient and effective process management
  • Facility with strategic technology platforms (VisionTracker, MedComms or related)
  • Ability to motivate and engage stakeholders at all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret complex scientific data and concepts and communicate effectively to a variety of culturally diverse audiences
  • Awareness and understanding of regulatory guidelines (FDA, PDMA, PhRMA, etc.) and how they apply to scientific communications and medical education
  • Strong analytical, administrative, and computer skills (Excel, MS Outlook, Power Point etc)
