TASKS. The contractor shall:

  • Analyze large data sets generated from a wide range of techniques including next-generation sequencing, microarray analysis, mass spectrometry, and high-throughput screening.
  • Use existing infrastructure and optimize pipelines for next-generation sequencing projects.
  • Work with data from RNA-seq, ChIP-seq and related high-throughput sequencing experiments; perform tasks, including but not limited to, quality control, alignment of reads and downstream analysis such as differential expression and peak-calling.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of new technologies, assays and methods; learn and incorporate these into subsequent analyses.
  • Develop new algorithms for analysis of next-generation sequencing and other genomics data.
  • Collaborate with staff on the design of experiments for next generation sequencing projects.
  • Utilize NIH’s high-performance computing resources to process data.
  • Develop tools using Python and/or R programming languages for commonly-performed tasks and for integrating results from multiple experiments.
  • Maintain and update code and commands used for analyses to ensure reproducible results.
  • Collect and review data; analyze and interpret data and results; provide reports based on analysis of scientific data.
  • Work with staff on data visualization to support the preparation of presentations and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals.
  • Co-write manuscripts.
  • Attend meetings; present research outcomes and make recommendations for future work.
  • Teach and advise staff in the use of bioinformatics analysis tools.


REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:

  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics or a related discipline; three (3) years of specialized experience plus a Master’s degree is equivalent to a Ph.D.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of related experience.
  • Expertise in high-throughput sequencing analysis of DNA or RNA sequence data using command-line tools, integrating the results from multiple experiments and applying biological knowledge of the interpretation of the results.
  • Knowledge of software development techniques, such as unit testing and version control.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of R and/or Python programming languages.
  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
